TransCanada to put its name on Dawson Creek kindness meters

Kindness Meters: brought to you by TransCanada.

The pipeline company will sponsor the City of Dawson Creek's new charity program, which made headlines around the province earlier this month.

Four retrofitted, bright red parking meters will soon be installed at locations around Dawson Creek, which the city hopes will encourage residents to donate their spare change to a rotating group of local non-profits.

The meters will go in once the city receives logos from TransCanada. The sponsorship means city hall will not have to pay for retrofitting or installing the meters.

The idea is based on a program in Nova Scotia.

City staff applied for a $10,000 grant from TransCanada's Coastal GasLink pipeline project, which would carry gas from the South Peace to the proposed LNG Canada plant in Kitimat.

"This donation will provide naming rights for a two-year period and will cover the cost of having the meters retrofitted, painted, labelled and installed as well as provide matching funds for the donations collected in the meters," a report to city council reads.

Retrofit and installation will cost around $2,500, while collecting and distributing change from the meters will run $1,500 a year. Another $3,500 will be used to match donations at the end of every six-month period.

The first four meters will be installed at the Calvin Kruk Centre for the Arts, the aquatic centre, Memorial Arena and the Dawson Creek Art Gallery.
