A strong first period led the Senior Canucks to a dominant 7-4 win over the Kelowna Sparta in the first game of Coy Cup action.
Kole Norris led the way, with three goals and an assist, including the team’s first two goals.
DC scored first, but Kelowna responded making it 1-1 early in the first frame. The Canucks responded with three straight goals — by Norris, Damon Kipp, and Jonathan Jasper — to head into the intermission with a 4-1 lead.
Neither team scored in the second, but Kelowna cut the lead to two goals just over two minutes into the third. Norris potted his hattrick to restore the three goal lead. Dolan Bjornson and Jasper — his second of the game — scored for the Senior C’s to put them at seven goals for the game.
The Sparta scored with 27 seconds left in regulation, but it wasn’t enough to spoil the win for the Canucks.
DC outshot Kelowna 26-23, with goaltender Josh Round making 19 saves for the Canucks. In all, nine different players put up points for the Canucks. While the Canucks have competed for the title before, a Coy Cup tournament win this year would be their first.
Tonight, the Canucks will face the host Williams Lake Stampeders, who also won their first game. Puck drop is at 8 pm.
