Senior Canucks take 7-3 win in Grimshaw

The Dawson Creek Canucks returned to winning ways Saturday, taking a 7-3 win over the Grimshaw Huskies.

Despite icing only 11 skaters and goalie Josh Round, the Canucks found the strength to come back after a 2-0 deficit in the first period.

Matt Schmermund opened the scoring with his first of what would become a hattrick 7:29 into the second period. Spencer Gover and Jeff Taylor added tallies to go into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.

Grimshaw tied the game three minutes into the third, but the Canucks would have the last laugh. Dolan Bjornson’s power play goal 1:27 later would be the first of four unanswered goals.

Schmermund added two — one shorthanded — and Riley Muise had the final. Schmermund is second in NPHL goal scoring with nine. (His nine in five games played, however, is the best goal per game average, with 1.8 goals per game).

The Canucks had 38 shots, while Round made 23 saves on 26 shots.

The Senior C’s play again this Thursday on the road against the Grande Prairie Athletics, looking to avenge their only loss in this week’s only game. Puck drop is 8:30 pm.
