Sherk qualified at the regional qualifiers in Richmond February last year, earning third overall in the women’s division, having competed in the 222 m, 333 m, 500 m, and 777 m races.
Sherk says she’s excited for the tournament. This is her second season competing in speed skating.
“It’s an incredible opportunity, this Special Olympics is just amazing,” says coach Keith McKeeman. “This could lead to nationals, then worlds.
She has gone to Richmond and Coquitlam for training. Sherk also skates with the Dawson Creek Speed Skating Club, having gone to meets in Fort St. John and Grande Prairie, as well as Dawson.
The opening ceremonies for the winter games go Thursday, February 21, and the speed skating competition goes the Friday and Saturday, with awards handed out on the Saturday.
