DC bowlers headed to BC Special Olympic Winter Games

Five bowlers — Ronny Collington, David Johnston, Lisa Perry, Dawn Stromquist, and Ralph Woidack — are headed to Vernon to represent Dawson Creek this weekend at the BC Special Olympic Winter Games.

The team qualified at regionals here in Dawson Creek last year. A second team from Dawson had missed qualifying by just one pin.

This is the first cycle — it’s a four year cycle, with regionals, provincials, nationals, and the international tournament in different years — that 5-pin bowling is part of the Special Olympics winter programming, and thus Perry and Woidack were on a nationals team just last summer.

It’s a pins over average tournament, so the bowlers have to best their averages by a number greater than their opponents.

Dawson Creek’s Peter Fenneman (who also went to nationals last summer) will also play in the games, but on a Prince George team as an injury replacement.

The team that wins the provincial tournament will qualify for nationals next year.

Coach Jack Walsh says next year they are looking to host the regional 10-pin bowling qualifier — which is still a summer sport.

As previously reported, the bowlers aren’t the only ones headed to Vernon from DC. Kianna Sherk will also be competing in speed skating.
