Bear Mountain will host 2020 alpine winter games event

The 2020 B.C. Winter Games might not take place until next February, but the people at Bear Mountain Ski Hill will be ready to put on a great event when the time comes. The ski hill is hosting the alpine portion of the games, specifically a U14 slalom race.

The skiers will practice at Bear Mountain on Thursday, Feb. 20, with the boys and girls races going Friday, Feb. 21. On Feb. 22, the skiers will race head to head in a separate slalom event.

“We are so excited to be hosting the race, and to be able to showcase what we have here at Bear Mountain. I wouldn’t have thought that Bear Mountain would be able to host this event, but B.C. Alpine has been here and has been very helpful in ensuring it will go well,” said Bryan Harman, the Sport Chair for Alpine Skiing at the B.C. Winter Games and a volunteer at Bear Mountain.

Harman and others have begun preparation for the races this summer. Last weekend, work was done to widen the main run, cutting down trees and clearing area to ensure that two races could take place side by side. Work still needs to be done to construct timing huts, starting gates, and running wiring up the hill.

Harman said they will need a large volunteer base to run the games next winter, and encourages anyone who’d like to help to contact the hill on the Bear Mountain Ski Hill Facebook Page.
