Unknown bear population numbers continue to be a safety concern for Tumbler Ridge, says mayor Keith Bertrand.
A June email from the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resources and Rural Development identified the town as a high density area for Grizzly and Black Bears.
“As far as the safety of our community goes, it’s something that needs to be more addressed. Even just a population count to see what’s in our area, the province is aware that it’s a high density area,” said Bertrand.
Garth Mowat, Large Carnivore Specialist for the province notes a high density population is normal for Tumbler Ridge.
“They’re always going to be there, because the habitat is there,” he said.
