"The virus is continuing to spread and Alberta is setting daily records for COVID-19 and deaths," said Alberta premier Jason Kenney Tuesday afternoon - noting the cases in seniors home and care homes.

"To protect the vulnerable we all have to do our part to limit community spread. Inevitably if there is wide-spread transmission - it will get to our seniors," said Kenney underlining the importance of stopping both ICU and hospital admissions, or a delay surgeries and health services will be forthcoming.

"To make sure we have beds to care for people who have COVID-19."

Kenney said it was time to take the right measures in the battle against COVID-19.

"I am declaring a state of public emergency in Alberta. These are the minimum restrictions - and social gatherings are the biggest problem," says Kenney.

Return to school for grades 7 to 12 in Alberta will be delayed for a week as well

This is an ongoing and developing story.
