It’s fire prevention week, so we’ve dedicated some pages in print to some common sense matters that can always use a reminding.
I’ve been big on drumming on themes lately, and the theme of this year’s week is; “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”
Here’s a scenerio from our friends at the province during this noted week.
“You and your family are fast asleep when the smoke alarm sounds: do you know what to do?”
As Keanu Reeves once blurted out in in a movie, “What do you do, what do you do?!?!”
It is simple, if you and yours don’t have a plan in place, it could prove deadly.
In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. That’s why home escape planning is so critical in a fire situation. It ensures that everyone in the household knows how to use that small window of time wisely.
“Developing and practicing a home escape plan is like building muscle memory,” will say every fire chief at every fire department.
“That pre-planning is what everyone will draw upon to snap into action and escape as quickly as possible in the event of a fire.”
This year’s theme, “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” works to better educate the public about the critical importance of developing a home escape plan and practicing it.
The Dawson Creek Fire Department is working to reinforce these life-saving messages throughout Fire Prevention Week.
In fact, they do it every other week and day of the year as well.
Until next time.
