The deal with the devil

I had a heartbreaking conversation with a man I’ve known for several years. He is an intelligent, rational human being, but he shared with me something that happened about twenty years ago.

His sister was pregnant with her first child and, late in her pregnancy, learned that her child had a defect that made life outside the womb impossible. The termination of her pregnancy was scheduled, and the entire family was grieving with her.

The night before the termination, my friend says he had a dream, but it wasn’t like any dream he had ever experienced before or since. In his dream, Satan appeared and made a bargain with him: he would allow the child to be born healthy if my friend would give him his soul. After agonizing over it for hours, and feeling the weight of his sister’s grief on his shoulders, my friend finally told Satan that he would agree to exchange his soul for the life of his sister’s unborn child.

The next day, his sister arrived for her appointment, and they performed a last minute ultrasound. To everyone’s astonishment, the baby was perfectly healthy, active, and viable. A few months later, a beautiful baby girl with absolutely no defect or illness was born.

Now, even though my friend has told me many times that he wishes he had my faith, and he would like to belong to God and be free from Satan’s ownership, he can’t because of the binding contract he made all those years ago. He is literally in bondage, a slave to the trade he thinks he made.

But here’s the thing: Satan has NO POWER over life or death. None. Zero. Zip. God, and God alone holds the keys to life, death, and hell, and He says so very clearly in His Bible. Satan has absolutely NO AUTHORITY to make any such deal with anyone.

Satan is called the Father of Lies in the Bible. The Deceiver. The most manipulative, attractive, seductive, toxic, poisonous, mind-bending liar that ever existed. He works by deceiving people into believing they are slaves to sin because he doesn’t actually have the power to make them slaves to sin.

Let’s take a moment to pray for our friends and loved ones that have believed the lie that they are too sinful for God to accept them, too flawed to be loved by Him, and too enslaved by Satan to break the chains that hold them captive. They can be free. Free from guilt, free from shame, free from Satan’s control and ownership. And freedom is truly a wonderful thing to have.
