KUCHARUK: the 'despise cooking' stage of life

I am at a stage in my life where I despise cooking. It isn’t the act of cooking insomuch as it is the figuring out what we are going to have (what I am going to make) for dinner?
I have been married for 36 years and during that time I surmise that I have probably cooked well over 15,000 meals. Wasn’t it Malcolm Gladwell that said that in order to be an expert at something, you need to do it over 10,000 times? Well then, I have 100% unlocked the ‘Expert Level’ badge of meal preparation.
I am done.
I am sick of it.
Ring the bell because I am tapping out.
THIRTY-SIX YEARS!!!! Thirty-six years of determining whether it is pork chops, taco’s, homemade hamburgers, minute steak, homemade soup, roast beef, chicken (made SO MANY different ways), etc.
“Let’s have pork cutlets?”
“Didn’t we have them last week?”
“Yeah, we did. What about a stir-fry?”
“I am out of rice”
“We don’t need rice; we can just have the meat and veggies”
“Nah….I am not in the mood for stir-fry”
The conversation is similar EACH and EVERY day.
And then there is the phenomenon that occurs when the cook does not personally enjoy what they have prepared.
“This is delicious!”
“Ugh…I can’t taste anything”
So, not only are you preparing over 15,000 meals, but strangely, you cannot appreciate said meal?
Let us not get started on the, “We should go out for dinner” conversation.
“Let’s go out for dinner!”
“Sure, but where?”
“You decide!”
“What about that sushi place that just opened?”
“I am not keen on sushi. We can go there if you REALLY want to go, I am sure there is something on the menu or I can just make myself something at home”.
“That’s ridiculous. Okay, what about <insert name of food chain here>?”
“I was there once today already”
“Really? You went there for lunch? Who did you go with?”
“Went with a couple of friends. We can go there again, but it would feel weird”
“Fine, why don’t I just make soup and grilled cheese for supper?”
“Sounds good to me!”
I finally realize why retirees spend so much time determining their meals plans. Is this my future?
