Canadian men's volleyball team knocks off Germany in Nations League action

RIMINI, Italy — The Canadian men's volleyball team swept Germany in Nations League action on Wednesday.

Set scores were 25-17, 26-24, 25-21.

Sharone Vernon-Evans of Toronto led the way with 15 points, Stephen Maar of Aurora, Ont., had 11 and Nick Hoag of Sherbrooke, Que., chipped in with 10.

Canada is 10th in the 16-team standings at 3-8, just behind Germany (4-7).

The Canadians face Japan on Thursday.

Canada's national men's and women's teams will both play a 15-match preliminary round until June 23. The top four countries in each division will advance to the semifinals and finals.

"We are happy with the win," said head coach Glenn Hoag. "We have had many ups and downs and we are trying to work on stabilizing our game and getting all our players healthy and functional before (the Olympics). This win is good for team morale. We played well, but we still have to perfect many small aspects of our game."
