The City of Dawson Creek says heavy rains forecast to hit the South Peace Tuesday afternoon has the potential to flood low lying sections of town.

According to Environment Canada, a storm front is expected to drop 60 to 80 mm of rain on the Peace Region June 14-16. Hudson's Hope and Chetwynd are expected to receive up to 100 mm.

Chief Administrative Officer Jim Chute said heavy rains can carry debris along Dawson Creek, blocking culverts and catch basins and creating the potential for flooding.

He said areas near the golf course, Tubby's Trailer Park, the Willowbrook Townhomes and the Dawson Creek Mall are most at risk.

"We're asking citizens to be vigilant and call us when they see problems," Chief Administrative Officer Jim Chute said. "We'll be patrolling throughout this event, but more eyes are better than less eyes. The more people who are watching that and can phone us and tell us we've got a problem in a particular area, the quicker we'll be there."

The city last experienced significant flooding in summer 2011.

Anyone whose property is threatened by flooding is asked to call the Dawson Creek Fire Department at 250-782-9898
