Urgent national product recall of backcountry transceiver

Faulty switch may not function in avalanche emergency

A warning and product recall has been announced by the federal government for a transceiver used by skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers.

It says the toggle switch on the Backcountry Access Tracker4 avalanche transceiver may separate from the unit – the switch, responsible for selecting transmit mode, search mode, or turning off the device.

The concern is the separation could prevent the transceiver from changing modes in the event of an avalanche, which may prevent searchers from quickly finding the person through the built-in beacon.

The unit (see photos) was sold under the Tracker4 Rescue Package with a UPC code of 886745889144 and a manufacturing date code 2021.

Anyone who's purchased this particular device, according to the government release, should immediately stop using the unit and contact K2 Corporation of Canada for a replacement product.

Full details can be found on the company's website.
