Online open house slated to read up on new Chetwynd Public Library project

Book studies - on building a book building.
Books
Books of all kinds.

The Chetwynd Public Library is a hub of the community, providing services and programs to residents since 1959. Over the years the library has grown in order to meet the public's needs, and now needs replacement to continue to provide services to the residents of Chetwynd and surrounding areas.

A open house is slated for those in the district to learn more.

To find out more about the project, please crack the book on Zoom on November 3 from 6pm - 8pm for a virtual open house.

Members of the project team and library advisory committee will be set up to speak to you about the design, features, and funding for the new facility, and will be able to answer your questions.

Since 2016, the District of Chetwynd, Chetwynd Public Library Board and staff, and Peace River Regional District have been working together on this project and are pleased to present it to the community The total budget for the new library is set at no more than $5 million.

While up to $950,000 may come from short-term borrowing, resulting in a tax increase for the residents and businesses in Chetwynd and the surrounding rural areas, the Peace River Regional District will continue to look for grants, donations and additional partners in an effort minimize those increases. Currently the residential tax rate for the Chetwynd Library Services Function is $0.1488 per $1,000 on land and improvements.

If $950,000 is required from short-term borrowing, the tax rate is anticipated to increase to between $0.20 to $0.22 per $1,000.

Short timeline

2016 - At the request of the District of Chetwynd and the Chetwynd Library Board, the Peace River Regional District started work on examining the options to either upgrade the current library or build a new library.

2017 - After the final report for the first phase of the project was concluded, the decision was made to hire an architect to complete a concept design and cost estimate for the project.

2018 - A design was completed by an architect working with the Advisory Committee. The design was to go public but was cancelled, as the committee felt the cost was too high.

2021 - A project team was hired to design and build a new facility, based on guidance from the Chetwynd Library Advisory Committee, Chetwynd Public Library Board, Library staff, Peace River Regional District, and District of Chetwynd.

The virtual open house goes November 3 from 6pm - 8pm.
