Monkman Provincial Park is closed under recommendation from the B.C. Wildifire Service as they attempt to manage a 110 hectare fire at TentfIre Creek and a 36 hectare fire at Hook Creek and Imperial Creek. The order came on July 1, one day after the fires broke out on June 30.
B.C. Wildfire Service says the closure is for the for safety of park users while they determine the best method of attack to use against the fires. Recreational users are ordered by the province to evacuate the park and remain out of it until further notice.
Initially, the fires were 4 and 2 hectares in size. Initially, the District of Tumbler Ridge said there was 'no need for alarm' and urged caution for residents in the area.
“While there is currently no need for alarm, residents are reminded to be prepared to leave quickly during an emergency event as you may not get as much notice as you would hope for,” wrote the district in a media release on July 1. :
