Hudson’s Hope is stepping up to host a softball tournament and dance benefit for Theresa Baker, a long-time resident and friend to the community, after learning of her stage three breast cancer diagnosis.
Baker says she’s grateful for the love and support, with the event coming as complete surprise. Funds will be used to help with medical travel expenses during her treatments.
“I had no idea, but I hear it’s already blown up. I can’t believe it,” she said. “I just appreciate all the support.”
Currently Baker drives to Fort St. John every two weeks for chemotherapy, while radiation treatment will take her to Prince George.
The ball tournament and dance are being organized by two of Baker’s close friends, Chris Siemens and Lindsay Trask, and will run from July 22 to 24.
Trask says she’s glad she could be there for Baker.
“She’s very well-known and very well liked,” said Trask. “I wanted to do some sort of fundraiser for her, and Chris came up with the idea of a ball tournament.”
Siemens said the tournament team slots sold out in one day, with competitors coming from Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, and Fort St. John. However, the event is still in need of spectators, sponsors, monetary donations, and items to raffle off.
“We’re super close, friends since high school, so a group of us got together and we decided to brainstorm different things we could do to get some financial help for her,” said Siemens.
The dance will be held on July 23 at the Hudson’s Hope Arena, as the District of Hudson’s Hope has volunteered the space free of charge for the organizers to use, added Siemens.
They’ve also partnered with non-profit The Friends of Hudson’s Hope Society to provide tax receipts for anyone who donates.
Anyone looking to donate or lend a hand with the fundraiser can reach Siemens at 250-783-0779 or Trask at 604-353-0933.
