The family of Jackie Da Ros, a longtime SD 59 teacher who recently passed away, are raising funds for a scholarship in her honour.

“One of the things she wanted to do was to set up a scholarship that would go to a student who might not necessarily get the best grades in the class, but someone who always did their best and worked really hard to achieve the most that they possibly could,” says her son, Adam Da Ros.

A teacher who taught everything from math to science to home economics and personal planning, Jackie passed away October 20 after a battle with breast cancer. She was in remission in the summer looking forward to new teaching position in the fall, before receiving a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer in her liver in late September.

Her wishes were to set up an annual scholarship, which her family are doing on her behalf. Their goal is to raise $10,000. (The goal was initially $5,000, but it has been raised, with more than $3,600 raised in six days).

The first recipient of the Jackie Da Ros Memorial Scholarship will be chosen from this year’s graduating class.

“My mom’s philosophy in teaching is that it’s not about how smart you are, if you are committed and dedicated and work really hard, you can still achieve just as much as anyone else,” says Adam.

“It was important to her to not only focus on the kids who were naturally very bright, but to also make sure to provide opportunities for anyone that was willing to do the work.”
