Peace region non-profits will be able to apply for funding to develop rustic recreation sites along the Peace River and Site C reservoir starting next month.
Applications to BC Hydro's Rustic Recreation Site Fund open in September, with up to $10,000 available to groups to create new sites or improve existing ones.
"Rustic sites generally feature minimal amenities, which may include a cleared area for camping, a fire pit, a picnic table or an outhouse," says BC Hydro.
BC Hydro says $100,000 has been earmarked to develop sites during construction of the Site C dam. Another $100,000 is being earmarked to develop more sites within the first 10 years of the dam's reservoir being filled.
Non-profit rec groups can apply from September to October 2021. The funding is also open to local governments and First Nation groups, BC Hydro said.
BC Hydro says successful grant applicants will need to have the necessary site designations or authorizations from the Rustic Site and Trails BC branch of the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development prior to receiving funds.
