Out of 24 suspensions for controlled substances since the beginning of the year, 12 are due to vaping, according to the most recent statistics released by School District 59.
“So we’re having a lot of students now in school, in classrooms, in bathrooms vaping,” says superintendent Candace Clouthier.
“Because there’s no smell, they can kind of keep it inside their jacket, like they push it as much as they can.”
Marijuana accounted for eight.
“But I don’t think that’s unusual in a year like this,” Clouthier notes, adding that they thought it would account for more of the suspensions with recent legalization.
