SD 59 trustees vote for increase in remuneration

School District 59 trustees voted at the November 21 board meeting to give themselves an $870 increase in remuneration.

The move is to offset an upcoming increase in taxable income — currently a third of an elected official’s stipend is designated as non-taxable allowance, but effective January 1, it will all be taxable.

Trustees will see an increase of either $511 or $1,228 in annual tax, depending on their employment situation, so $870 was picked as the number inbetween.

According to district documents, the trustee base rate is $15,309 prior to the increase.

The board made the vote at their first open board meeting of the term. The previous board had decided at the October open meeting to defer the decision to the new board.

Trustee Travis Jones voted against the motion, saying he wanted to delay the vote to wait for data on remuneration across the province.
