Peace region posties get back to work

It was part of a 24 hour rotating strike, and now it’s back to business. Rotating strike action from Canada Post CUPW employees for Wednesday is focused on eastern Canada. Nanaimo has also been named for the day. 

Tuesday saw Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Prince George Canada Post offices and depot employees go on strike in an attempt to help bolster contract negotiations.

 CUPW national president Mike Palecek said postal workers are fighting for good jobs. 

“(This is) a balance work and home life, equality for all our workers and safe working conditions,” he says.

“We are also bargaining for the future – future employees and everyone who relies on the postal service. It’s time to look at expanded public services like postal banking and senior check-ins. Public services can only help communities thrive and grow.” 

A Dawson Creek Canada Post employee said they were informed of the strike action Tuesday, only an hour before they walked off the job.

CUPW has been negotiating collective agreements with Canada Post for almost a year for the Urban Postal Operations and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) bargaining units.
