Highway 97 closed between DC and Chetwynd after pedestrian killed

UPDATED — The section of Highway 97 is now open, DriveBC reported around 1 pm.

Highway 97 is closed between between 277 Rd and 275 Rd — 46 km south of Dawson Creek to 47 km north of Chetwynd — is closed due to a vehicle incident, in which a pedestrian was hit and killed.

Dawson Creek RCMP say they were called in around 7:25 am to a scene where a man in his 60's had been hit by a pickup truck and died. Police say the driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene and is cooperating.

There is a small vehicle (less then 1 tonne) detour via Stuckey Rd and 271 Road, DriveBC reports, while there is a large vehicle detour via Fort St. John or Tumbler Ridge.

DriveBC reports the estimated time of opening at 5 PM today, but DC RCMP say it will remain closed until they have completed the scene examination.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call North Peace Regional Traffic Services in Fort St. John at 250-787-8140.
