Former music teacher charged with sex assault pleads not guilty, trial set for 2017

Police in Coquitlam arrested Michael Dodd on Nov. 19, 2015.

Trial dates have been set for a former Dawson Creek music teacher accused of sexual assault.

Police in Coquitlam arrested Michael Dodd on Nov. 19, 2015. The former Dawson Creek Secondary School teacher, who left town in Sept. 2015, is charged with sexual assault and sexual interference with a person under 16.

Dodd was 53 at the time of the arrest. A publication ban has been set on the proceedings to protect the identities of underage victims.

Dodd's trial is set to begin April 10, 2017 and will run at least 4 days. He entered a plea of not guilty in Dawson Creek provincial court July 5 and opted to be tried by a judge.

If convicted, Dodd faces one to ten years of jail time on the sexual assault charge and one to 14 years on the charge of sexual interference.

An RCMP release at the time of Dodd's arrest said he also taught private music classes. According to a 2011 report in a Grande Prairie newspaper, Dodd had been a teacher in Dawson Creek for 26 years and played guitar with local bands.

Police released information on the arrest because they believed there may have been additional offences that had gone unreported.

Dodd has not been found guilty of the offences.
