A challenger enters the mayoral race in Dawson Creek

As the nomination period closes, it appears there will be a race for the top job in Dawson Creek after all.

Trenten Laarz, who reports himself as an employee of Jock's Restoration in his nomination papers, will challenge incumbent Dale Bumstead for mayor.

For council, nine candidates have come forward. Incumbents Paul Gevatkoff, Shaely Wilbur, Cheryl Shuman, and Charlie Parslow will be running for re-election.

Jerimy Adam Earl, David Griffith, Amy Kaempf, Johanna Martens, and Blair Lekstrom have put their names forward.

With six seats on council, there will be at least two different councillors for the next term, as Mark Rogers and Terry McFadyen are not seeking re-election.

Tumbler Ridge will likely have the most lively mayoral race of the South Peace, with four candidates — incumbent Don McPherson, Jerrilyn Schembri, Garret Golhof, and Keith Bertrand. Ten council candidates have come forward, just three of them incumbents — Barry Blackman, Monty Hendrickson, Will Howe (i), Joannne Kirby (i), Darryl Krakowka (i), Stacey Lajeunesse, Bernie Lehmann, Curtis Miedzinski, Chris Norbury, and Frank Wood.

The Chetwynd mayoral race is a two horse one, with Councillor Alec Brownlee going against newcomer Allen Courtoreille. While Mayor Merlin Nichols will not be running for re-election, he will be running for a seat on council in a race of seven candidates — incumbents Clay Bassendowski, Mel Deck, Rochelle Galbraith, and Laura Weisgerber, and newcomers Jocelyn Disher and Janet Wark.

Pouce Coupe incumbent Lorraine Michetti is the only one to put her name forward in the mayoral race, after Councillor Andre Lavoie dropped out to run for council again. Six are running for council — Lavoie, fellow incumbents Raymond Johnston and Barb Smith, and former councillors Marlene Hebert, Ken Drover, and Donna White.

All incumbents for the PRRD electoral area directors have filed for re-election, and they face no challengers.

For the SD 59 race, the names are the same as yesterday's update, except Roxanne Gulick has put her name forward as the only candidate for Electoral Area II (Tumbler Ridge).

While nomination period is closed, the official list of candidates won't be known until September 21 at 4 pm, as candidates have until then to withdraw.
