Seniors can now find addiction recovery support online, as Westminster House has launched a new virtual recovery program in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A New Westminster-based addiction recovery group is finding new ways to support seniors in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Westminster House Society has launched a virtual addiction recovery program for seniors. It kicked off on July 27, and women are already using online support groups and counselling to help them with addictions including alcoholism and substance use.

“Support for addiction recovery for seniors has been a challenge up to this point,” said Susan Hogarth, executive director at Westminster House, in a press release from the society.

“One of the benefits of being forced to go online, due to COVID-19, has been the creation of a supportive program for seniors that is easy to use and affordable. We saw an opportunity to use online learning as a way to reach out and support those who may need to isolate and are not able to use their normal support during these unprecedented times.”

Amy H., a recovering alcoholic, is one of the women taking part in the virtual support programs. She has committed to 60 days of virtual recovery.

“The program is providing me a virtual experience of personalized, compassionate support I would not be able to find anywhere else,” she said.

The web-based recovery program features group therapy using a secured video conferencing system, as well as daily activities and events.
