Pacific Northern Gas says it will be modernizing meter reading for customers in Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, and Tumbler Ridge.
The company says it will be installing automated meter reading technology to remotely read customer meters. The $4.2-million project is expected to start in February 2021 and completed by August 2021.
PNG says the automated technology will improve the safety and efficiency of meter reading and gas billing, and eliminate the need for its employees to enter home and business properties each month to read meters.
“Upgrading to automated meter reading technology will help us enhance customer service by ensuring billing accuracy and eliminating estimated billing for properties that cannot be accessed due to locked gates, animals or weather,” said senior operations and customer service manager Dominic Feenan. “AMR is expected to result in cost savings over the life of the technology which will both cover the project cost and benefit PNG customers.”
About 20,000 customers will have the new meters installed. Stratacom, the installation contractor, will begin calling customers mid-January to confirm their service date, PNG said.
Installation will take 10 to 15 minutes with no interruption to gas service, PNG said. As long as a customer’s meter is accessible, no one needs to be home for the installation.
"Service representatives will follow all COVID-19 safety protocols including minimizing in-person interactions wherever possible," PNG said. "All Stratacom installers and vehicles will carry identification clearly indicating that they are contracted by PNG."
