Attempt to recall Premier David Eby fails

This is B.C.'s 28th recall petition against a sitting MLA — all of which have failed.

A petition with Elections BC to recall Premier David Eby from his Vancouver-Point Grey riding has failed to garner the required 16,449 signatures from registered voters.

Elections BC stated Tuesday petitioner Salvatore Vetro and 271 registered canvassers did not reach the signature threshold of 40 per cent of eligible voters in the riding by March 20, as the recall team failed to submit the petition in time.

This was the 28th petition issued since the Recall and Initiative Act came into force in 1995. None have met the requirements established by the act while a 29th petition against Peace River North MLA Dan Davies of the BC Liberal Party is ongoing.

Vetro, a self-described “freedom fighter,” launched the petition because of his opposition to the BC NDP’s health-care policies, particularly vaccine mandates.

Vetro is a retired HandyDART driver and local actor who has dipped into politics before.

In 2010, the 69-year-old founded a fringe political party called BC First Party, a proposed alternative to the BC Liberals and BC NDP, which did not gain any traction with the public.
