Shazam strikes in Mile Zero

Captain Marvel is in Dawson Creek. The other one.

Marvel Films and Carol Danvers aside, Shazam's name was an acronym derived from the six immortal elders who grant Captain Marvel his superpowers: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury.

So Shazam sets a tone for DC on celluloid like Aquaman did over the holidays. A film that doesn’t treat itself, or the general genre, so seriously. The conceit here is pretty much how the character was created back in the day – Superman, but his alter-ego is not a mild-mannered reporter, rather a 12 year old kid.

A great concept – if it is pulled off well. A superhero movie framed with Tom Hanks’ Big in mind. Zachary Levy plays the big red cheese – just as Patrick Warburton could have a decade ago.

Here the tone is very much in the realm of the first three original Superman films. The comic aspect is treated serious but with tongue in cheek. You know eventually some more of the Shazam Marvel family is going to show up - and it's also a strong reveal both character and casting wise.

Shazam plays this week in Mile Zero.
